Experience and Knowledge Sharing on Local Forest Act Formulation and Implementation

Experience and knowledge sharing on local forest act formulation and implementation bringing together the Chairpersons of Shahid Lakhan Rural Municipality (Gorkha) and Devghat Rural Municipality (Tanahu), and the Vice Chairperson of Tarakhola Rural Municipality (Baglung) in Pokhara.

The program commenced with a presentation on CIPRED’s journey and efforts in research, documentation, and evidence-based policy dialogue to strengthen the recognition of customary institutions and their contributions to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and ecological balance. This was followed by presentations from representatives of the local governments, who shared their experiences, progress, challenges, and priorities for ensuring the recognition of customary forest governance practices within Local Forest Acts.

The representatives also highlighted ongoing initiatives to promote forest-based economies, including agroforestry and handicrafts, focusing on creating economic opportunities for women and youth. They shared that CIPRED’s efforts and support at the local level have contributed to strengthening the recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ roles in forest management and promoting sustainable, forest-based livelihoods.

The discussions further underscored persistent challenges, particularly the limited documentation of customary practices and gaps in awareness, which continue to hinder their formal recognition. The session provided an important platform for sharing practical experiences and identifying opportunities to further strengthen customary forest governance and sustainable local economies.
